Hi, I’m Dr. Jeffrey Lam.
I’m a board-eligible academic psychiatrist, trained at Brown University and Harvard University / Cambridge Health Alliance, and am researching what it means to live a good life.
About
Like many people, I’ve long been fascinated by the bigger questions: what does it mean to live a good life? How does one become happy? What does fulfillment actually look like? I’ve pursued these questions formally, through academic research on positive psychology, flourishing, and how to live well within mental illness — work that’s been supported by multiple research grants and fellowships.
I believe my research makes me a better clinician, and my clinical work makes me a better researcher. Most of my week is spent in research, teaching, and clinical work at an academic institution. I reserve a small part of it for private practice, which is my chance to practice mental healthcare exactly as I believe it should be practiced: getting to know clients as full human beings, and making collaborative, informed decisions grounded in discussion, values, and the evidence-based psychiatry.
My approach
I like to be transparent about how I work, so you can tell early on whether it’s a good fit. Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of therapeutic success is the alliance between client and therapist. In order to see if we will be a good fit, we will start with a no-charge 20-30-minute call to see if we might work well together.
Initial evaluation
A comprehensive assessment across 1–4 sessions (~60–80 minutes each), including several questionnaires. I believe good formulation and diagnosis take real time. This extends far beyond DSM diagnoses, and is critical are a necessary pre-requisite for good treatment.
Tentative treatment plan
By the end of the assessment, we’ll build a plan together. And by this point, you will know if I am the right medication prescriber, therapist, or both for you. If not, I’ll connect you with someone from my community network who may be a better fit.
Ongoing care
Weekly 50-minute sessions (therapy and/or medication management) for roughly 6–24 months, building momentum toward your presenting concerns.
Maintenance
30-minute medication visits every 1–2 months, with “booster” therapy sessions as needed.
Services
I offer both individual and group care, integrating medication management with psychotherapy where it’s helpful.
Individual therapy & medication management
Integrative approach drawing on psychodynamic, relational, and cognitive behavioral therapy — plus elements of coaching. I’m also in ongoing supervision with a senior therapist to keep sharpening this work for you.
Group psychotherapy
A virtual men’s group. Open-ended conversation touching on relationships, community and friendship, masculinity, meaning and purpose, and professional identity. Med management, if needed, is scheduled right after group.
Community & friendship
Masculinity
Meaning & purpose
Professional identity
On medications: trust is foundational here. You’re the expert on your body — I bring the research and clinical experience. I’ll make recommendations, but the decisions are yours, and I’m always glad to share the papers behind my thinking.
On outcomes: as a researcher, I care a lot about how we measure progress — not just symptom reduction, but flourishing and happiness too. We’ll co-select an evidence-based outcome measure together, tied to your own goals and values.
Billing
I don’t accept insurance directly and am considered an out-of-network provider. Payment is due at time of service; I’ll provide a superbill on request so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement. Sessions may also be eligible for FSA/HSA funds.
What should I ask my insurance carrier?
My eligibility for out-of-network outpatient / telepsychiatry mental health care.
What are the relevant CPT codes?
90792 (initial evaluation), 90833 + 99213 (therapy + medication management).
What else matters?
Your annual deductible before coverage begins, and how many sessions your plan covers per year.
